Vic: New labelling laws for basketball hoops

MELBOURNE, April 9 AAP - The Victorian government will ban the sale of basketball hoopsthat do not carry warning labels, following the state's third slam-dunking death in recentyears.

A nine-year-old boy died last week after a section of brick wall collapsed as he attemptedto slam dunk a ball through a hoop attached to his family's garage in the Melbourne suburbof Kilsyth.

It was the third death linked to slam dunking in Victoria since 1996.

Victorian Premier Steve Bracks today announced legislation would be introduced to stateparliament within two months to ensure all basketball hoops sold carried warning labels.

Mr Bracks said safety checks would made on all basketball hoops in the state's publicschools before the second term resumed next week.

He said the Building Control Commission would work with "interested parties" to developthe proposed basketball hoop warnings and specifications.

"You won't be able to avoid them (the labels)," Mr Bracks told Melbourne's 3AW radio.

"You won't be able to sell these items, we will introduce legislation within two monthsto ensure you can't sell these backboards and rings without these (warning) labels."

Following last week's slam-dunk death, Victoria's building commissioner urged anyonewith a basketball ring to consult a qualified professional to check it was fixed to astructurally-sound wall.

"Building regulations do not specifically take into account additions such as a basketballring, but a qualified professional can make sure they are mounted safely," commissionerTony Arnel said.

Basketball Victoria also announced it would send a warning notice to all its juniorteams about practising at home.
